大学坐落于拥有悠久历史的英国诺丁汉——联合国教科文组织评选的“文学之城”。大学在诺丁汉共有4个校区（University Park，Jubilee，King's Meadow，Sutton Bonington）。大学美丽的校园在英国享有盛誉，校区依湖而建，风景秀丽，校园内有雕塑花园，中央湖泊，各具特色的建筑和景观曾多次获奖。
诺丁汉大学是英国罗素大学集团创始成员之一，大学的历史可以追溯到1881年诺丁汉第一所公民学院（Civic College）的成立，1948年，该学院获得大学资质更名为诺丁汉大学。一直秉承着着开放合作的态度进行科研和教学，大学的科研成绩97%以上的研究得到国际认可，80％以上的研究被评为“世界领先”或“国际优秀”的最高类别，是英国研究实力排名前十的大学（REF，2014）。
目前诺丁汉大学拥有47,500多名学生，其中9,000多名来自海外。诺丁汉大学的学生社区遍布150多个国家/地区，是英国最具国际性的大学之一。诺丁汉大学的学位在毕业生就业市场有显著的优势，大学鼓励学生发展就业技能。诺丁汉大学在2020年QS毕业生就业能力排名中位列全球前70。
诺丁汉大学现有5大院系，下属多个学科分支。其中，社会科学学院的历史可以追溯到1798年，是欧洲最大、学科种类最多的学院之一。学校的医学院虽然未被划分在教学学院中，却有着不一般的历史。 医学院于1970年作为女王医疗中心的一部分而成立，是20世纪在英国建立的第一所医学院。目前，医学院被医学和健康科学学生以及学习生命科学课程（生物化学和神经科学）的学生所使用。
